Reflection 1: First thoughts about my 'swamp'

My swamp is known as ‘The Hub’. It is a multipurpose space for teacher assistants, resource preparation, student small group work and a social space for staff to meet together and eat. It is a bit like a candy store, so many options for use of the space; however, there is no clear standout as to the best option or what will taste the best.
The space originally was a science preparation area and storeroom, designed as part of a secondary school building. It now serves as the only withdrawal space for the Upper Primary as well as a meeting/social space, preparation space and student work area. The multipurpose nature of 'The Hub' often creates confusion as there are overlapping areas/zones for various purposes. Refurbishment of the space has been limited to date. It is a ‘make do’ space but it has so much potential.
The artificial lighting is sufficient and the ceilings are high, creating a welcoming feel and a sense of openness. The large fixed benches in the middle of the room and around the edges provides ample working room, however, they are not being used effectively. The storage is sufficient, however, there are still areas that have not been utilised in the best way to make the most of all the available space. The wall separating the two parts of the space provides some opportunity for a quieter zone, however, there is no door to help minimise noise. As there are so many different people using this space: students, staff and parents, clear defined zones within the space are necessary. It likens to a shared bedroom, both inhabitants have common possessions and need access to certain things, but not everything is to be shared and personal space is required. This ‘Hub’ is much the same. It should be a hub of productive activity for staff, students and parents. The design challenge is to ensure that this space is utilised to its full capacity for all stakeholders.
